Have you ever considered forest bathing in Arkansas – similar to experiences in Japan, England, Costa Rica, Norway or the Red Woods? Would your students be interested in learning about new or seasoned entrepreneurial endeavors in the state?  It might encourage them to first explore Arkansas activities and to consider ideas of their own!  Join Startup Junkie, the Bessie Moore Center for Economic Education, and Economics Arkansas to learn about a new initiative promoting  growth of outdoor recreation in Arkansas!  After all, we are The Natural State!  So why not find new ways to help your students connect with and understand the value of our beautiful outdoors.

The session will be hosted by Toby Teeter, the director of Collaborative, a new University of Arkansas education and research presence.  He will be accompanied by Arkansas recrepreneurs – a term your students should learn.  We will learn from entrepreneurs such as John ‘Driftwood’ Ruskey, the chief visionary officer and founder of Quapaw Canoe Rentals.  John is a seasoned  entrepreneur from the Delta who uses traditional methods to build canoes similar to those of our Native American ancestors.  John followed his passion and built a Quapaw by using knowledge from the past to provide today’s adventurers an experience in boats constructed using Native American skills.  As a preview of Quapaw Canoe, check out this video or where he prepares a riverside meal for Athony Bourdain.   Not only has John grown a unique business using his love for the Mississippi River, he also gives back to his community through youth education in Helena.

We will host four virtual Startup Culture presentations this school year from 4:30 to 5:30.  We are including entrepreneurs from across the state to help your students relate to them.  The first session is on Monday, October, 18, 2021 with the topic of Recrepreneurs.  Each session will provide videos of the companies and live interactions with the founders.  They will be recorded for use in your classes.  And in many cases, these entrepreneurs would join your class virtually as a guest speaker.  Activities will be provided to help you teach about our remarkable Arkansas entrepreneurs.  For a sample, check out Natural State Entrepreneurs. In this curriculum your students take an affinity quiz to see what Arkansas entrepreneur is similar to them; learn about Natural State entrepreneurs; and participate in a Kahoot to assess their learning.

Relax at school or home and spend an hour being motivated by creative problem solvers who are driven by passion.  If at school, invite students to join you. Possible next entrepreneur is Kim Bryden of Cureate. Please channel your ideas to us for topics or entrepreneurs.  Let’s grow a statewide force for the future!
