I have been a Planet Money listener since the Great Recession when strange things were happening in the economy that I did not understand. Credit default swaps and many other financial buzz words were new to me. I discovered that the Planet Money reporters explained things in ways that people without economics knowledge could understand. I started using it with my college students as an extension to our inclass learning.
Planet Money finds interesting and relevant topics to use to explain economics. Your students will enjoy the stories and not realize they are learning economics. And all good entrepreneurs MUST understand economics!
The topics are vast and can be integrated into many subject areas. This podcast reports on the US Department of Education making teacher grants and then not keeping their part of the deal. Past economic events show people migrating to cities for better lives, but these trends are changing due to technology. Learn how one Norwegian with a lot of extra fish changed the tastes of a nation! Do you know the story of the birth of accounting? Why are there not more women in the field of economics? Do we need to apply antitrust laws to the big tech firms? And years of topics to enhance the learning in your class.
Podcasts make for good homework assignments. My students choose to listen to a story rather than read an article. What about yours? Please share your ideas for using this news source with your students.
