Do your students have what it takes to be an entrepreneur?  What characteristics are important to entrepreneurs?  This is highly debated but the Bessie Moore Center for Economic Education has activities that will help you to identify and discuss the characteristics.  Puzzling Arkansas Entrepreneurs invites students to first consider their own characteristics.  Then they solve puzzles to learn about a variety of Arkansas entrepreneurs.  They share their learnings with the class using charades.  Then students analyze the characteristics from the entrepreneurs described.

As mentioned, these characteristics are debated.  Over my years of researching this I have found one characteristic that is almost universal. Entrepreneurs are avid readers and lifetime learners.  The ones who drop out of school often do so because they are learning at a much faster rate. I listened the Alexander Hamilton Broadway play music today.  One point that caught my attention was that Alexander, who was poor and with no father, read everything he could.  The ongoing learner trait is critically important to success.

I hope you will use this activity with your students to help them learn about entrepreneurs all across the state in many types of businesses – both large and small.  I invite you to share your comments about it as well as your ideas for implementing it in your course.
